… But Inside It’s So Delightful

November 27, 2008 – 11:31 pm
James Taylor, singing holiday classics, is slated to be one of the performers for tomorrow's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. The parade is one of the highlights of the entire year for me; wrapped up in a blanket with a big mug of seasonal coffee in one hand and a pumpkin scone in the other, there is simply nothing better.Well, except for living in New York to see it for myself from my 20th-story window. Someday, someday.-tf

The Sloane Ranger

November 27, 2008 – 11:31 pm
"The Sloane Ranger is back. This particular subset of English society in the 1980s — young upper-class women who spent their years between graduation and marriage engaged in the pursuits of shopping, lunching and clubbing, and most famously personified by Lady Diana Spencer — is having a bit of a resurgence in London these days."According to the New York Times, Sloane Rangers are the English equivalent to socialites - with a much snappier name. Like their distant cousins, the preppies, they even have their own very official handbook or guide to life, if you will. Why have I never heard of this little culture, and where can I sign up? Just kidding. Surely after a month of spending my days shopping and lunching, I would crave a little structure and deadlines ... right? Right?-tf

Unlucky Laptop

November 27, 2008 – 11:31 pm
After months of papers and deadlines, I decided that Thanksgiving week would be the practical time to surrender my beloved computer to our campus's tech team. My "D" key has not worked since July, my battery only lasts through one-third of a lecture class (or one-half of an episode of Gossip Girl), and the internal fan is so loud it overpowers anything playing on iTunes... which means my hearing is probably shot from perpetually wearing headphones the past few months.I was all set and had prepared myself for separation anxiety; a week without a laptop would be so worth a working computer when school resumes. Unfortunately, the tech guy rattled off problem after problem and quoted repairs around $600. Ouch.Interestingly enough, I just wrote an article about computer upgrades ("Laptop Logic: To buy or not to buy") and so I can take my own advice and say that, yes, I ...

This Is My Winter Song

November 27, 2008 – 11:31 pm
I am an exam, a term paper, and two deadlines away from Thanksgiving Break. Listening to wintery music on repeat and drinking mug after mug of holiday coffee is making it a teensy bit more tolerable. In a fit of study procrastination, I already made my iPod playlist for Friday afternoon's drive home. Predictably, I wasn't able to save it until then and have been playing it non-stop.Winter Song - Sara Bareilles & Ingrid MichaelsonWinter Storm - Joshua JamesSometimes The Wheels - Neil HalsteadCoffee - Motel MotelI Can Feel A Hot One - Manchester OrchestraYes, I'm Cold - Chris BathgateWintering In Brooklyn - The Last Town ChorusHoliday Road - Matt Pond PAWinter Rush - Some By SeaSeasons Greetings - Robbers On High StreetThe One I Love - Greg LaswellLike A Cloak - Joey RyanI'd Rather Be With You - Joshua RadinLittle Flowers - Denison WitmerNight Windows - The WeakerthansPlease ...
